6th Course | Fundamentals of Child and Adolescent Protection: Children's Rights in Theory and Practice



We present the sixth edition of our course «Fundamentals of child and adolescent protection: Children's rights in theory and practice«, which we will hold between November 14, 2023, and January 25, 2024, in a virtual format with synchronous classes. Individuals who enroll in the program before October 14 automatically receive a 10% discount on the total cost.

This program, organized by our Center for Studies on Justice and Society (CJS) of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, aims to provide professionals from the public, private, and civil society sectors with knowledge and analytical skills in some of the main fields of current concern regarding childhood and adolescence. The course features an interdisciplinary focus, based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, where professionals are sought to access high-level information and practices based on developments observed in the field of theory and practice within child and adolescent protection systems.

Breakdown

The course includes:

29 chronological hours of training.
Classes are synchronous, live, via the Zoom platform. Those taught by English-speaking professors feature simultaneous interpretation. They will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 18:00 and 19:50 hrs, from November 14, 2023, to January 25, 2024.
Each class will include mandatory and complementary reading material to delve deeper into the seminar topics. Proficiency in the English language is recommended to complete the reading of the material.

Fundamentals of Comprehensive Protection

Convention on the Rights of the Child and its implications for child protection systems.
National Systems for the Comprehensive Protection of Children in the Americas. Lessons and Challenges.
Perspectives for social intervention in comprehensive protection systems

2. Stages of Childhood and Adolescence Development

Socioemotional development in childhood and adolescence: Fundamentals of protection from a developmental and life-course perspective.
Progressive autonomy and its implications for protection systems.
Mental health and its challenges in adolescence
Adolescence and substance use

3. Violation of Rights

Effects of childhood and adolescence trauma
Child and Adolescent-Friendly Justice
Special protection and alternative care. Debates and intervention models.
Childhood and sexual abuse.

Sociology of Juvenile Delinquency: Contemporary Theories
Juvenile criminal policy in Latin America and Chile.

The faculty roster features a payroll that includes Chilean and foreign lawyers, sociologists, anthropologists, physicians, social workers, psychologists, and public policy experts, with extensive knowledge in childhood and adolescence matters.

Francisca González Concha

Coordinator of the Children's Area at the UC Center for Justice and Society, Master in Sociology from the Catholic University, Postgraduate Diploma in Social Policy, Development, and Poverty from the Alberto Hurtado University. With experience in the area of specialized protection for children and adolescents, her areas of specialization and research are violence against children and adolescents, child labor and its worst forms, and comprehensive child and adolescent protection systems.

Anuar Quesille Lawyer from Diego Portales University. Master in International Law from the University of Chile. Postgraduate degree in International Human Rights Law from Utrecht University, Netherlands. Legal advisor to various institutions dedicated to children and international consultant for UNICEF.

Ester Valenzuela: Attorney, Master in Children, Adolescents, and Family Rights from UDP, with a postgraduate degree in Social Mediation from the University of Chile. Executive Director of the Ibero-American Center for Children's Rights.

Javier González Economist (PhD and MPhil from the University of Cambridge) specialized in development, inequality, social mobility, education, and innovation. He is Director and Co-founder of SUMMA, the Research and Innovation Laboratory for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Carmen Lagos: Surgeon from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, with a diploma in psychotherapy. She has worked as a researcher and implementer of pilot programs to improve mental health in SENAME collaborating residential care facilities. She is a board member of the NGO América Solidaria.
